A 9.5 mm rope sits in the middle: thin enough to clip easily on a long sport route, thick enough to last a season of top-roping and still take a fall on a trad lead. The dry treatment goes through the core as well as the sheath, so it does not soak up snow on an alpine day.
The middle is dyed black for a metre. On a 60 m rope that means a lower-off is safe on routes up to 30 m; check the route length before you lower, every time.
Retire it after a severe fall, after any contact with acid or a sharp edge that cuts the sheath, or ten years after manufacture even if unused. Our trail note on retiring a rope goes through the checks.
