Cut to fit over a base layer and a midweight fleece. Between two sizes, take the larger one if you layer a lot underneath.

Field notes

Down is lighter for the warmth, but it does badly when a belay stance turns to sleet. The Firn uses a synthetic fill that keeps most of its loft wet and dries overnight in a tent.

It is cut to go on over everything: a shell, a fleece, a harness. The hood fits over a helmet, and the two-way zip opens from the bottom so you can reach your belay loop without letting the cold in.

Packs into its own chest pocket, with a clip loop to hang it from a harness.
