Field notes

Phones are good at telling you where you are and bad at doing it for nine hours in the cold. A baseplate compass and a paper map still work when the battery does not.

Set the local declination once with the small screw on the cord and the compass corrects for it. The romer scales match the two common map scales, so you can read a grid reference to ten metres.

The torch, clip and sunglasses in the photograph are not included; the torch is the Beam Hand Torch.
